Jobs -> Salary Negotiation
As a worker, you have to be aware that working in a company is a
two way relationship. You work, and the company pays you. They
hire you because they see that you can do the job or at least
the best fit for the job. In this article, we will help you get
the salary you deserve.
When you apply for work, HR departments often give you a form.
You need to put in your background, personal info, educational
info and other info including your desired salary. The best thing
that you can put here is "negotiable". Just always remember that
they should be the one who will state a certain figure.
During the exams and interviews, come up with a desired salary
in mind. This figure should be 30% higher than your previous
salary or a figure that you think is enough for you. Your salary
will automatically be slashed by 10% to 20%. So let us say you
are earning P15,000, your NET SALARY (the amount that you will
receive) will be a lot lower (do the math). Deductions like tax,
insurance, etc will be subtracted to the amount that they will offer.
Sometimes, an interviewer will ask you how much is your desired
salary. Tell them that you are more interested in the job than
the salary. Tell them that you prefer to talk about it when they
already considered you for the job. Remember that they should be
the first one to tell the amount they will offer. Be aware that
HR will offer you a value lower than the your desired salary. So
try to aim higher. A plus +3 to +4k will be safe.
When you passed all the exams (mental, emotional, physical) and
all the interviews, they will now decide to offer you the job.
They will often set a meeting to discuss the salary, benefits
etc included in the package. This is the best time to think that
"I'm the best", "I belong to the top", "I dont deserve something lower".
When they offer you the job, this means that they are really considering
you to get the job. They will not be instantly disappointed if you
reject their first offer. Dont think that this will be your last
chance to get a job offer.
During the moment of salary negotiation, most of the applicants
(like you) will say "YES" to the salary the company offers. Little
they know that Salary Negotiators have an extra 1,000 to 2,000
(or more) allowance to give you in case you reject their initial
offer. Usually, they will increase their offer after 20 to 30
minutes of discussion.
Salary Negotiators MUST sense that you are uninterested with
the package that they offer (even if you are overwhelmed by their
offer). Try to conserve your "YES". Look at the things that are
not included in the package like overtime pay, bonuses etc. Do
not be afraid by the words that you will hear like "Take it or
leave it".
Salary Negotiators (as what I call them) will discourage you to
the fullest. They will say all the things that you do not have.
If you are a new graduate, then they will say that you do not have
enough experience. Things like that may discourage you but think
that they are offering you the job because you are QUALIFIED.
They will hire you without any work experience because they see
your potential (for new grads). When you are in the "salary negotiation
stage", you try to negotiate. Do not just say "YES".
If workers will just say "YES" to what the company offers, then
the salary level in Phillippines will never be higher. If you think
you are the best, and you can do a lot for the job, then ask for more.
If the offer is really good for you, then accept it. If not, then
just say, "well, thank you for the job offer but the salary does
not meet my requirements".
